Too Bad for the Democrats
Howdy Doody lost his reelection bid yesterday due to his support of the President on the war in Iraq. This is unfortunate for the Democrat party and, more importantly, for a moderately progressive movement. Joe Lieberman had one of the most liberal voting records in the Senate and was one of the most reasonable elected officials in D.C. But, the crazy wing of the D party is out for blood and unfortunately, Lieberman has fallen victim. I would love to see him win as an Independent, but realistically, he is done. To the detriment of the Democratic Party. I have inched closer to declaring myself as an independent and so long as folks like Howard Dean, Sheehan and Pelosi continue to be the face of the liberal movement, we will constantly lose elections. DUH!!!! What say you Abe, you true "liberal". Oh wait, Abe is windsurfing this week.

You Democrats lost a good man in that race. I disagreed with him often and found him to be too liberal for my tastes, but he is a principled man who didn't bend whichever way the wind was blowing. All this over one issue? Too bad for you!

Lieberman screwed up.
It's fine that he supported/supports the Iraq war. He's not the only Democrat who feels that way. His problem is that he told his fellow citizens to shut up and stop criticizing the President about how the war was being waged. He made the ridiculous arguement that criticizing the President only encourages terrorists.
Look, serious people of all political stripes realize that the Iraq war is a disaster. Even if you supported going in, you now know that the operation was bungled horribly. In America, you stand up and say something when your government is running the train off the tracks.
The fact that Joe wants everyone to shut up about it is what killed him. I'm not terribly sorry to see him go.
