The Haves and the Have Mores
I've been biting my tongue about the federal response to the third-world-esque chaos that is currently New Orleans. As Bush defenders must be weary of saying after all of his tragic mistakes - let's not lay blame, let's just try to get this thing fixed. Well, no more. As our hearts are breaking for the plight of the poverty stricken who are starving and dying in our own American city, this is what we get from Mr. Bush:
"'The good news is - and it's hard for some to see it now - that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house - there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch.' (Laughter)." - president George W. Bush, today."
As Sullivan said...
Just think of that quote for a minute; and the laughter that followed. The poor and the black are dying, dead, drowned and desperate in New Orleans and elsewhere. But the president manages to talk about the future "fantastic" porch of a rich, powerful white man who only recently resigned his position because he regretted the failure of Strom Thurmond to hold back the tide of racial desegregation.

I couldn't wait for the blog to come about the federal response and I have been checking twogoodlegs by the hour. It's amazing. It's amazing. To think that you dems could blame a poor response time on one person. I agree that this shit wasn't taken care of in the right way. Hell, it wasn't taken care of right away like it should have been. Another thing that pisses me off is the race card. I swear, it's so much bullshit to say that relief efforts were delayed becase the evacuees were primarily black. The mayor of N.O. is black, the city government is primarily black. Shit coulda been done earlier, we all agree on that, but don't blame it on W. Relief efforts came late, but people from N.O. have to look at their own and see that they halted relief efforts as well. You had people shooting at medical helicopters trying to save critically ill patients and babies. Thats messed up man. Are you going to blame Bush for that as well? We all have to agree that this is a messed up time in American history and that no one saw this coming. Instead of choosing sides and trying to blame people, let's join together and forget politics and try to help and pray for the people of the Gulf Coast. I also think that we can all agree that we need to take a closer look at our government, demo and rep., and see what they are doing. The government is all to political and not for the people. I agree that shit didn't go down like it shoulda on the relief side, but hey, let's just join together, forget party lines and just [pray and help get this once vibrant city back on its feet. Anyone with me?
im with ya but praying aint goin to do shit. i mean if "god" let that happen then why who he help the people affected????
would not who*
Hey at least I got some support.... yet it doesn't have the same feeling when its from a atheist. I'll keep praying.

Dear Mr. Bush:
Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.
Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?
Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!
I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?
And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!
On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.
There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.
No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!
You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.
Yours,
MM
You made me laugh by leaving that ridiculous post. Yep, Bush's fault. Congress had nothing to do with it. Wait, I meant the Democrats in Congress had nothing to do with it. Oh yeah... was the tsunami's relief efforts in areas where whites were the majority. I didn't think so, and we helped out there pretty fast. So fucking stop pulling out the race card and stop using this as a political smear campaign. It's fucked up as it is, we don't need to hear we coulda done this, we coulda done that. Look to the future and shut the hell up.
wow and you pray? cool
its funny how anonymous is just that, anonymous. Put some sort of name... or are you too scared? maybe people will take your comments seriously then.
It boggles my mind that any American is more concerned with asking what Kanye West's credentials are than what Michael Brown's credentials are. Kanye West is an entertainer who has about as much right to comment on his opinion as you or me. Michael Brown is a former commissioner for some Arabian Horse association (a position he was essentially fired from), but he was a college buddy of a big Bush fundraiser, so he became head of FEMA. His lack of experience sort of explains FEMA's incompetent response to Katrina.
How anyone could be more concerned with Kanye West is effing beyond me.
Send me Kanye West's bio and we'll compare his vs. Brown's credentials. I will admit Brown should be fired but FEMA in itself should be disbanded too.

I think every politician who had any power to prevent the extent of this is to blame, democrat and republican alike. But go and defend your political heros and they will continue to behave in the same self interested, self advancing manners......YOU FOOLS!!!!
ram, its amazing isn't it. Not only is it frustrating but it just gets so annoying. BUT if Kerry was in office he probably would have done everything perfect... hell if Kerry (or Clinton) were in office the damn hurricane wouldn't have even come. That's the vibe I'm feeling from the left.
Righty tighty, did you ignore my comment or are you just too dense? I can't say Kerry would have done anything different, I can't know that and neither can you. Lets stick to the issue, something went severely wrong and every citizen should be alarmed, democrat and republican alike. But go on defending your party.....
serial, i agree that the locals bear some responsibility. but you've just got your facts absolutely wrong. they ordered a mandatory evacuation BEFORE bush called, not BECAUSE he called.
3gl, I am not "defending" my party. I am just saying that we should not blame W for this one. We should not blame one single person. By the way, I did not see your comment above mine. Therefor, I wouldn't say I am too dense, as you put it, rather it wasn't noticed by me. I apologize. Actually I think it hadn't been posted yet when I posted. So the delay was to blame. Trust me, I believe that everyone was to blame. It annoys me that Bush is getting the brunt of it. Sorry, 3... I just don't like seeing someone who shouldn't shoulder all the blame, shouldering it. But I do agree with your comment that I was too dense to see. Peace.
By agreeing with your comment... I meant the one about everyone is to blame regardless of party... not the comment that I am dense.... just thought I would clear that up.
Serial, I am aware that the conservatives have taken that article and tried to run with it, but it never says the evacuation was ordered after bush "appealed for" it.
The August 28 press conference began with Nagin's statement that "a mandatory evacuation order is hereby called for all of the parish of Orleans." Following Nagin's remarks, Blanco commented on the grave situation facing the city:
BLANCO: I want to reiterate what the mayor has said. This is a very dangerous time. JUST BEFORE WE WALKED INTO THIS ROOM, President Bush called and told me to share with all of you that he is very concerned about the citizens. He is concerned about the impact that this hurricane would have on our people. And he asked me to please ensure that there would be a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans."
So, Bush called immediately prior to the press conference at which the evacuation was ordered. The press conference was already set. The evacuation was going to be ordered.
From that, you somehow deduce that he vigorously pressed the locals into action, and without him the situation would have been disastrous? Sorry, but that's fucking absurd.
I will say, though, that it's nice to see he at least had some awareness of the issue while he was on vacation.
Even if he was on vacation, he still is in the white house. The logo behind him when he is on his rance reads: "The Western White House". So that's good.
Well, I'm glad you've at least abandoned your absurd argument that Bush "pressed" the locals until they finally ordered the evacuation. We're making progress. You've shown the capacity for reason, which we at 2GL appreciate.
Whoops. Perhaps we jumped the gun on commending your capacity for reason. Sometimes blind fealty to your man-child president wins over all, it seems.
Remember, you wrote: "Had [Bush]not pressed for a mandatory evacuation the situation would be a hell of a lot worse."
Now, you're saying that well he didn't actually press for anything and your source doesn't actually say that, but you'd sure bet he at least talked about it with the governor on Saturday when he granted the governor's request to declare the area a state of emergency.
You're spiraling. If you insist on blind loyalty to this administration, you would be best advised to say the following:
"yes, the feds screwed up. hell, even newt gingrich knows it. and yes, bush made a mistake in nominating brown. but he will hold him accountable and fire him for his poor job here."
you would regain some credibility. and i'll bet you'd feel better about yourself too!
