"I'm A Struggle President" Just Doesn't Have That Ring
As we here at 2GL explained over a year ago, the Bush Administration misnamed the War on Terror. Can't have actual war against a concept. A struggle against violent extremism? That sounds about right to us. It also sounds right to the Pentagon (even Rummy!), which has consciously stopped using "War on Terror" in its lexicon, and has replaces it with the "Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism."
But, just as Bush overruled the Pentagon when it objected to torturing people, Bush has overruled the Pentagon on its choice of nomenclature.

If Orwell had titled his masterpiece 2004 instead of 1984, he'd have been right on the money. The Bush administration struggles hard (and it's hard work) to implement Newspeak. The Clear Skies Initiative results in more pollution. Rove didn't actually "name" Valerie Plame. Here's a good one -- the Working Families Tax Relief Act actually imposes taxes on the health insurance benefits of dependents between the ages of 18 and 25. It'll cost millions to administer in the private and public sectors and siphon more money from workers' wallets. More likely, those young adults will just be left uninsured.
So it's no surprise that some high rollers in the administration want to change the lingo on a bad idea that keeps churning out body bags. The "struggle against violent extremism" sucks, too. When will the indictments come down? Or, if you prefer, "manifest measures of prosecutorial opprobrium."
On second thought, a better Newspeak term for indictments would be "get-well cards from the American public."
man if i was a conservative and i saw this i would feel like such an asshole...........wow good thing im not!!
